Abstract	Various substituted benzal chlorides are converted into alkyl phenylacetates (ArCH2COOR) under CO atmosphere on reaction with a catalytic amount of Fe(CO)5, a base, and an alcohol. The optimum conditions are found as atmospheric pressure of CO, 40℃, potassium hydroxide as base, and medium of alcohol.
