Abstract
The transference of nickel in 2N nickel solutions with 0 and 3 percent boric acid is measured by the Hittorf method using a cell of a new design. The two transference numbers obtained were 0.52 and 0.36, respectively. The difference between them is explained as being due to a complex ion formation between nickel ion and boric acid in the latter type of solution. A complex ion like Ni[H3BO3]++x-nH2O is proposed and is believed to best fit of all the facts found experimentally. This complex ion is considered to dissociate at the cathode film and the freed boric acid to neutralize OH ions maintaining the pH of the solution around the cathode at a constant value. A large increase in the transference number of nickel was also found, compared to that in a dilute solution. This is explained as being due to a major change in the degree of hydration of nickel ions with the concentration.
